HAPA HAOLE HULAS -- the acclaimed Kahauanu Lake Trio performs some of the most well-known hapa-haole hulas. Originally released in 1970, this long-time favorite, is now available on CD.

Hapa-haole (part foreign) music was popularized by local entertainers to satisfy Hawaii's burgeoning tourist industry of the 1930s and 1940s. For many of those tourists, this was the only music they connected with he islands. The music is lovely, the instrumentation distinctly Hawaiian, and the primarily English lyrics understood by most.
