Album Notes

The acknowledged "King of Slack Key", Gabby was born on Maui and taught himself to play the steel guitar at a young age -- learning slack key only a few years later and never learning how to read music. His professional career spanned 47 years, during which he appeared in some 200 clubs in the islands. He worked with the best of the islands' musicians, including his longtime friend Andy Cummings, who is also performing on this album.

This is yet another reissue of some great music from the career of the legendary Gabby "Pops"Pahinui (born Charles Philip Kahahawai). His signature tune, the legendary Sam Lia's composition "Hi`ilawe" is here, as well as some tunes that Hawai`i visitors would find familiar. Produced by the late Dave Guard of the Kingston Trio, this album is a collaboration between Gabby and his good friend Andy Cummings -- featuring a mix of vocal and instrumental pieces.
