- 3-6-2008: PRESS RELEASE: Barefoot Natives featured in audio CD of new 'Old Makana Had A Taro Farm'- The Barefoot Natives, Willie K and Eric Gilliom, are known for their musical range and versatility. There isn't a musical genre in which can't perform and excel. So when Dr. Carolan was looking for recording artists to work with on his new children's book Old Makana Had a Taro Farm, the Barefoot Natives were his first choice. "I had it in my head that they could really do something unique and special withthe song and the animal sounds," said Dr. Carolan, "and what they have created is better than anything I imagined." Old Makana Had a Taro Farm is a Hawaiian version of the well-known children's classic Old McDonald Had a Farm. The book takes readers onto a taro farm where we find native animals such as the koloa (Hawaiian duck) and nene (Hawaiian goose), as well as later arrivals such as the pua`a (pig) and pipi wahine (cow). Eric Gilliom is credited with making all of the animal sounds, and he even showcases the noises made during a taro planting cycle -- from the "plop-plop" of planting huli (taro starts) to the "pound-pound" of making poi. Willie K created the slack-key arrangement for the song, and brings a fresh, new sound to the old classic. Old Makana Had a Taro Farm can be purchased at Banana Patch Press

- 2-21-2008: Press release: "PBS HAWAII SPECIAL BROADCAST PREMIERE: Tony Conjugacion returns to his roots and pays tribute to his musical influences in a special edition of "Na Mele", Monday, March 10th at 7:30pm on PBS Hawaii. The setting for the show is an imaginary parlor in a Hawaiian home from the beginning of the twentieth century. In this laidback environment, Tony and musicians Aaron J. Sala (piano), Jeff Au Hoy (steel guitar), Danny Kiaha (upright bass), and Dwight Kanae (guitar) jam party-style as members of Tony’s Halau Na Wainohia get up and dance as the spirit moves them. Also in the parlor are some of the most respected kupuna from the world of hula and traditional Hawaiian mele: the Ladies of Kaulumau (Piolani G. Motta, Joan S. Lindsey, April Johnson-Villa) and the Alama sisters Leilani and Puanani. Each of them, when moved or coaxed, graces us with a dance. This spontaneous kanikapila is an historic occasion captured by the cameras in the PBS Hawaii studio. By bringing these treasures of the Hawaiian culture together with their student (Tony) and his students, a precious art form is passed from generation to generation. All of this happens to the accompaniment of music that spans Tony’s illustrious career. 'I feel incredibly privileged and honored with this opportunity to share my thirty-nine year career in Hawaii’s entertainment industry through the media that PBS Hawaii is providing with the Na Mele series,' says Conjugacion. 'While many have encouraged me to document my career in an autobiography, PBS Hawaii is affording me a more intimate media to convey this through my music and includes some of the most significant individuals that are still inspiring my life and career.' The show includes classic songs by the likes of R. Alex Anderson, Lena Machado, Maddy Lam, and original compositions by Tony himself. For aficionados of Hawaiian music and dance, it is a must. For newcomers to the genre, the pure joyfulness of the performances will make you a Hawaiian music convert."

- 12-30-2007 (from the New York Times): "For Hawaiian music traditionalists, there isn't a more substantial active figure than Keali`i Reichel. Since the mid-1990s this singer-songwriter, chanter, choreographer and historian has devised an accessible but edifying style, with each of his albums — the most recent being "Ke`alaokamaile," from 2003 — advancing the causes of both traditional and contemporary Hawaiian culture. Now he has an excellent DVD, "Kukahi: Live in Concert" (Punahele Productions), recorded last year in Honolulu. Ranging from ancient chants to the sweetest sort of folk-stirred pop, it pairs every performance with dance; Mr. Reichel's own hula troupe, Halau Ke`alaokamaile, makes several dramatic appearances. As a result "Kukahi" offers the most comprehensive portrait yet of Mr. Reichel's serious skills, including his puckish sense of humor. It's also an ideal cultural survey of Hawaii for anyone curious enough to look past grass skirts and pearly shells."

Amy Hanaiali`i earned a slot on this week’s Top Heatseekers (Pacific) chart (#9) for her new release "A Hawaiian Christmas", along with John Cruz (#4) for "One of These Days".
