Album Notes
Sam Li`a was a Hawaiian song composer who spent his life in the remote valley of Waipi`o on Hawai`i island. There he perpetuated the tradition of celebrating the beauty of one's place and memorializing the events of its people. Sam Li`a Kalainaina (1881-1975) shared volumes of memories about people, places and elements of Waipio, that emerged in his music and his poetry.
Among the musicians inspired by Sam Li`a is Eddie Kamae, a major force in the revival of Hawaiian music. In this film, he translates his gratitude and love for Li`a into a visual song, in which music, place and people find their original harmony.
Originally released on videotape in 1988, this film is now available on DVD.
