Album Notes

Otis Schaper has been kicking around the Honolulu music scene for a while now, but he’s just now come around to putting out a record, because as he puts it surfing keeps getting in the way. The new CD is called “Big Circles,” and Schaper is introducing it with a release party. The Florida native has been surfing and playing guitar since he was 16, and spent some years living in Spain and Puerto Rico, chasing waves, before arriving in Hawaii in 1987. He owns his own surfboard company — Chronic Surfboards.

His CD is loaded with 17 tracks of original songs and featuring guest vocal performances by Starr Kalahiki, Rachel Gonzales and Millicent Cummings with backing vocals by Ernie Cruz Jr. and Mike Love. Also featured are Kit Ebersbach on piano and organ, Rolando Sanchez on latin percussion, Bobby Ingano and Buck Giles on lap steel, Dr. Trey on ukulele, Steve Ware on trumpet, Jon Porlas Jr. and Lindy Patterson on percussion, Rex Godinez on sax, Claire Sakai Hazzard on violin, Karen Bechtel on cello, Anna Womac on viola, John Wichman-Walczak on accordion, Sulubika on flute, Jeff Kloetzel on guitar, Ian Chames, Jon Hawes, and Kelli Heath on bass, Mike Love on bass and keyboard, Sean Carrol, Michael Scherr and James Ganecko on drums. Talk about a collaborative effort!

Otis has been dubbed "the Bob Dylan of Haleiwa" by Lynn Nani, music coordinator for the Haleiwa Arts Festival. He has been a figure in the local music scene since the early nineties in bands like Otis and The Abusers and Big Electric Cat. He joined The Strangers in 1996 and wrote or co- wrote, along with Michael Scherr, the songs on their album "Meet The Strangers". Otis's influences include The Clash, Elvis Costello, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
