Album Notes

A wonderful and special 98-track collection of Hawaiian verses and chants used to teach children the alphabet and arithmetic, as well as games (hide-and-seek, string figures) and little ditties, some of which are of English origin. The liner notes are extensive, and contain "lyrics" and translations for most of the tracks.

Mary Kawena Pukui was a native Hawaiian speaker, raised at a time when language was learned and spoken among family members. Her style of speech and approach to translation may not include some of the contemporary conventions used by today's Hawaiian speakers. In this recording, you will find the charm of Hawaiian words and phrases skillfully captured in Pukui's translations.

There are over 98 tracks on this album -- too many to list here!
