Album Notes

Ni`ihau -- a very private island in the Hawaiian archipelago -- has managed to nurture an older Hawaiian lifestyle that has disappeared almost everywhere else. It has remained sheltered from many of the changes that have occurred in Hawai`i for the past century.

The music on this CD captures the enchantment of this unique island. The late brothers Malaki and Nahale Kanahele developed their musical foundations by listening to their parents play ki ho`alu (Hawaiian slack key guitar) while singing himene (hymns) and popular mele (music) in the quiet evenings at their family home.
