The unique sound and technique of ki ho`alu -- Hawaiian slack key guitar -- descends from campfire music played by Spanish-Mexican cowboys who arrived in Hawai`i nearly two centuries ago to wrangle the newly introduced cattle. Their Hawaiian hosts were piqued by the sounds; then made it their own, their way. This documentary explores the unusually hypnotic stylings of ki ho`alu -- the sound and soul of one of the world's Hawaiian slack key masters, Keola Beamer. From a musical family that pre-dates Western contact, Keola secures his ancient roots while melding them with modern sound.

Keola's performance footage is interspersed with scenic shots as well as appearances by Moanalani and Nona Beamer, Ozzie Kotani, Willie Nelson, , George Winston, Willie K., and Cindy Combs. There is also a discussion about guitar construction with Maui luthier, Steve Grimes.
