Kahauanu Lake taught himself to play `ukulele by watching other musicians...and eventually organized the now-legendary Kahauanu Lake Trio in 1955.
His contemporary arrangements and and musical phrasing of traditional Hawaiian songs for the Kahauanu Lake Trio became a benchmark for many groups that followed, and stimulated the return of singing in the Hawaiian language.
