Album Notes
UWOLANI -- The 20 recordings performed on this album by Halau O Kekuhi, document
ko`ihonua (creation chants),
mele inoa (name chants), chants to honor the deities and ceremonies, and chants that recognize the beauty of the places, winds, and rains of Hawai`i.
Hawaiian mele (music) in its truest form is best embodied in `oli (vocal chanting that is not accompanied by dance), and mele hula (chants accompanied by dance and implements). Once the foundation for a vital oral tradition, this music has remained relatively pure despite the introduction of new instruments and musical styles to the islands. These oral traditions live on within the esteemed Halau o Kekuhi, from the island of Hawai`i, and The Edith Kanaka`ole Foundation.
Liner notes include lyrics and translations.
