George Lanakilakeikiahiali`i Na`ope, born February 25, 1928 in Kalihi (O`ahu), began his studies of music and dance at the age of three under the tutelage of his great-grandmother, Mary Maliapukaokalani Na`ope and continued with the few remaining hula masters of the early 20th century. Kumu hula "Uncle George", co-founder of the Merrie Monarch Festival, began his recording career at the age of twelve and has spent his life as a performer, touring widely in the US, Japan, and Europe. Still actively teaching and entertaining, he is also passionately committed to creating a hula archive ("Ho Lani") that will preserve the many songs, chants, and dances of Hawai`i Island.
