Album Notes

Bill Kaiwa offers his recognizable baritone talents to NA HALIA, a collection of traditional Hawaiian songs that have the power to evoke a fond remembrance. Kaiwa is an accomplished singer, songwriter and composer -- one of Hawaiian music's rare gems.

Born William Kaiwa Ani in Honolulu, he spent his boyhood in Papakolea, but at 14 went to Kaua`i as the hanai son of John Waterhouse and worked with the paniolo (cowboys) on Kipukai Ranch. It was there that he acquired his knowledge of Hawaiian; both "regular" Hawaiian and the distinct dialect spoken on Ni`ihau and some parts of Kaua`i.

William Kaiwa Ani became Bill Kaiwa at the request of relatives who told him "we don't want to lose this (family) name."

Kaiwa began his music career performing at the Moana Surfrider Hotel in Waikîkî, where he performed for six years; he was also on the bill for 12 years at the Kuhio. He was a regular vocalist on the "Hawaii Calls" radio show, with its international broadcasts of traditional Hawaiian music from Waikîkî. Kaiwa also headlined his own group -- Bill Kaiwa & The Maile Serenaders.

And despite the fact that his first hit and long-time signature song is "Boy From Laupahoehoe," Kaiwa isn't from there, and his parents were from Kohala.
